AquaRevival is the 1st and Only Filter Manufacturer to Achieve NSF International Certification to New Standard for Cryptosporidium Reduction in Swimming Pools

Jan 30, 2025 | Press Releases

NSF/ANSI/CAN Standard 50 is the recognized US-Canadian performance and safety standard for evaluation of materials, chemicals, products, and systems for recreational water applications including pool, spa, waterparks. NSF 50 covers many product types and technologies and includes detailed technical requirements for testing and validation. AquaRevival is the 1st and only company to have its filtration systems tested and certified to the new cryptosporidium reduction criteria.

“This is a monumental breakthrough for the aquatics industry,” said Paul Nehlen, president of AquaRevival. “Pool facility managers know all too well the danger that crypto can pose to swimmers, and we are proud that AquaRevival offers the first and only NSF-certified filtration system envisaged in the Model Aquatic Heath Code (MAHC) for reducing that risk.”

The cryptosporidium filtration removal validation testing regimen within NSF 50 is based upon municipal drinking water requirements. This higher level of performance was balloted into the 2021 version of NSF 50. The cryptosporidium reduction tests in NSF 50 were derived from requirements for the municipal drinking water industry and NSF/ANSI 419: Public Drinking Water Equipment Performance – Filtration. The criteria within NSF 419 were developed from state and federal requirements including the US EPA Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2) to help reduce cryptosporidiosis risk.

The new NSF 50 filtration crypto removal criteria enables recreational water systems to be tested and validated for public health safety and protection of swimmers. The independent, 3rd party testing and certification from NSF International affirms AquaRevival’s commitment to be the best and offer the best performance and public health protection available for recreational water facility management.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, Cryptosporidium was studied between 2009-2017 and found to be the leading cause of outbreaks of diarrhea linked to water in the U.S., with 35% of outbreaks and more than half (56%) of all reported cases due to swallowing contaminated water in pools or water playgrounds. While most people with healthy immune systems will recover, the effects of an infection can lead to life-threatening malnutrition and wasting in immunocompromised patients.

According to the CDC website “The 2024 MAHC (5th Edition) underscores CDC’s long-term involvement and commitment to improving aquatic health and safety. MAHC guidance stemmed from concern about the substantially increasing number of reported [Crypto] outbreaks starting in the mid-1990s. Creation of the MAHC was the major recommendation of a 2005 national workshop, which was charged with developing recommendations to reduce the incidence of these outbreaks. Local, state, and federal public health officials and the aquatics sector formed an unprecedented 7-year collaboration to create the 2014 MAHC (1st Edition).”

AquaRevival’s line of NSF-certified filters uses regenerative media filtration technology, which can filter out particulates in water as small as 1 micron. In addition, the company has patented technology that can handle the highest filtration rates in the aquatics industry at 3.0 gallons per minute (GPM) per square foot. When paired with a proprietary blend of media that is used in the filter, this system produced the results that mandated the new NSF Cryptosporidium Certification.

With a national accrediting body such as the NSF that studies products for claims such as safeguarding public health in aquatics, this new certification sets the standard for water treatment technology in preventing outbreaks of Cryptosporidium.
