In 2007, a milestone publication in Nature Medicine by Japanese scientist, Ohsawa which reported that molecular hydrogen is a novel selective antioxidant. Together with its safety that had been acknowledged in deep water diving, a bright prospect of molecular hydrogen was brought into research and possible clinical application. Remission of symptoms was observed after hydrogen treatment in a variety of conditions including ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, metabolic syndromes, cancer and inflammation. Promising results were also obtained from preliminary clinical trials on arthritis, diabetes-related disorders, artheroscelorosis, and neurological impairments.
H2 increases the mitochondrial membrane potential and the cellular ATP level, which are accompanied increased glutathione and superoxide levels. Hydrogen increases the expression of anti-oxidative enzymes underlying the Nrf2 pathway thereby improving the resistance to exacerbated oxidative stress.

Blood, muscle, ligaments, bone, and cartilage have all been shown to respond to bioelectromagnetic fields. Bioelectricity plays an important role in normal development, wound healing, and regeneration. Following injury, the bioelectric field changes, and various membrane ion channels and pumps become involved in wound healing.
