This week I’m presenting my article on high-intensity PEMF.
The mechanism of therapeutic action of PEMF stabilizes cation channels, restores equilibrium in ROS (free radicals), upregulates classes of protective and restorative genes, and downregulates dysregulatory and apoptotic genes. Biological cells respond to pulsed electromagnetic fields and they affect several cellular processes depending on the field characteristics that include intensity and frequency.
The intensity of the PEMF is the magnetic flux density measured in Gauss (G), milliTesla (mT) or Tesla (T). The intensity determines how “strong” the PEMF is, and the amount of energy that is radiated or transferred to the body. PEMF systems have an intensity level that tell us how powerful they are.
High-intensity pulsed electromagnetic fields are generally considered being over 2000 Gauss or 0.2 Tesla, some may argue its higher. Contrary to low-intensity PEMF, High-intensity PEMF is felt strongly as the muscles vibrate, twitch or experience contractions. The high power PEMF depolarizes membranes of peripheral motoneurons and initiates muscle contraction. When the pulse train or series of pulses is applied, muscles experience non-voluntary contractions or “supramaximal” contractions. The supramaximal muscle contractions produced by the application of high-intensity PEMF have been found to strengthen and tone the abdominal muscles, arms, buttocks, and thighs and has been indicated for aesthetic applications. So don’t be surprised if you’re looking sleeker after high-intensity PEMF.
High-intensity PEMF has been shown to penetrate deeper into tissues and provide more rapid pain relief compared to lower intensity devices. Additionally, some studies suggest that high-intensity PEMF may have greater anti-inflammatory effects and promote faster healing in certain conditions.
Low intensity may or may not produce any sensations at all, certainly the sensations of improved blood flow from the PEMF will be like a mild tingling or even reduction in blood pressure in case of hypertension or heart disease, which would make the session feel relaxing. One can also feel the after effects such as improved sleep and higher energy. With high-power the after effects will be even more pronounced.
