United States Agency for International Development (USAID) launched the new Rehabilitation for Ukraine (Rehab4U) project, the largest U.S. government investment in physical rehabilitation in Ukraine.
CHATSWORTH, Calif., Nov. 8, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) launched the new Rehabilitation for Ukraine (Rehab4U) project, the largest U.S. government investment in physical rehabilitation in Ukraine. Working in close partnership with the Ministry of Health, Rehab4U will bring together government agencies, non-governmental and civil society organizations, and international partners to create an effective rehabilitation system that can provide all Ukrainians in need of rehabilitation services with the appropriate level of care and support in the communities in which they live.
The number of Ukrainians requiring quality rehabilitation care has increased dramatically due to Russia’s ongoing war. Implemented by Momentum Wheels for Humanity, in partnership with Results for Development, Project HOPE Ukraine, the National Assembly of People with Disabilities of Ukraine, and Deloitte, Rehab4U will promote a resilient and inclusive rehabilitation system for people recovering from injuries, illnesses, and surgeries as well as for people with disabilities, and will be implemented across 15 regions in Ukraine to ensure nationwide impact.
Speaking at the event, United States Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink told the audience, “The U.S. Government has long been a steadfast partner in Ukraine’s efforts to strengthen its healthcare system, and today, in the face of Russia’s brutal war, this support is more essential than ever. The number of injured veterans and civilians since the start of the full-scale invasion has made strengthening rehabilitation services a priority investment for the United States, as we work to support your people who suffer every day under Russia’s cruel attacks.”
Minister of Health Viktor Liashko remarked, “USAID has been our strategic partner for many years now, and we are sincerely grateful for the strong support of Ukraine at all levels, especially in this difficult time. The ongoing full-scale war poses new challenges to the healthcare system. The launch of the Rehab4U project is especially important for our country today, as the development of a modern rehabilitation system and improved access to quality services remain our top priorities.”
Over the next five years, Rehab4U will promote the development of rehabilitation infrastructure making rehabilitation services available at the community level; improve standards of care, including by expanding the availability of modern assistive technologies; and enhance the skills of rehabilitation professionals. The program will also work to support social inclusion and empowerment of people with disabilities so that all Ukrainians can contribute to the social and economic development of their country.
“Momentum Wheels for Humanity has been working in Ukraine for more than 25 years. We are committed to supporting an integrated approach to rehabilitation services that meets the needs of the full population. With support from USAID and in partnership with the Ministry of Health, we look forward to continuing our efforts to strengthen the rehabilitation sector and promote practices that allow for greater integration of people of all abilities to fully engage with their community,” explained Jeannette Hanowsky, Deputy Executive Director of Momentum Wheels for Humanity, the prime implementer of USAID’s Rehab4U project.
